In an attempt to feed
people by a more easier and productive manner, the food has become full of
chemicals that are harmful to our health leading to many of the diseases we are
faced with today; obesity, cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure and
diabetes., these toxic chemicals that are being put into the processing of our
foods that we mainly eat today could be driving our society into a world of
excess health issues.. All of these affects are controllable by the food that
we intake, Switching to eating organic food items can easily reduce these
health issues and many direct environment problems through agriculture process such
as air pollution, water pollution.
Milk is a great source of calcium & protein. You’ve probably heard about organic milk as a healthier alternative to industrial milk which has been accused of being laden with antibiotics and stress hormones. Organic milk is essentially chemical-free and healthier as the cows are fed grass or organically cultivated fodder.
The health effects of milk may depend on the breed of cow it came from.
A1 (Jersey Cow) VS A2 (Desi Cow) milk |
What is A1 and A2 milk?
Whey and Casein are 2 major milk proteins.Casein is the largest group of proteins found in milk which makes up about 80% of the total protein content. There are several types of casein in milk. Beta-casein is the second most prevalent and exists in at least 13 different forms.
The two most common forms are:
- A1 beta-casein. Milk from breeds of cows that originated in northern Europe is generally high in A1 beta-casein. These breeds include Holstein, Friesian, Ayrshire, and British Shorthorn.
- A2 beta-casein. Milk that is high in A2 beta-casein is mainly found in breeds that originate in India but also in Africa and has almost 75 breeds that are found throughout both Africa and South Asia. Of which 30 are found only in India like Desi Cow (Zebu/Bos Indicus/Humped Cow). Wikipedia has a detailed article on Desi Cow Breeds.
Problem with A1 milk-
Some studies claim that BCM 7 oxidizes LDL cholesterol and increases the risk of arteriosclerosis, it is also suggested that it suppresses immune system, causes type I diabetes, Coronary Heart Disease, Autism, Schizophrenia and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome!
Human breast milk contains only the A2 type and not the A1 type and unlike cows' milk, human breast milk contains very little of the other casein protein groups. So, most of the casein in human breast milk is A2 type beta-casein (however, some cows' milk proteins may pass into a mother's breast milk from her own diet).
